(Leonard Bernstein, 1972) This is a live performance of Brahms at the Tanglewood Festival, where the young Bernstein took his first steps as a conductor in 1940 under Koussevitzky. Two years later, in 1974, he conducted the Boston Symphony Orchestra in a concert celebrating the 100th anniversary of Koussevitzky's birth at Tanglewood. This may have been the reason for this concert. The finale of No. 2 and the passacaglia in No. 4 were as fiery as if he were possessed. As was the case with the live recordings of the complete works with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra (1981, 1982), this live performance will remind you of Bernstein's very passionate approach and his great affinity with Brahms.
