He is also known for laying the groundwork for crossover concerts by inviting talented pianists (regardless of genre, of course) and staging high-energy performances. This video compiles concerts from the “Munich Piano Summer” in 1982 and 1989. Just looking at the program is enough to send shivers down your spine. The 1989 footage features not only Bach and Mozart—composers Guld’s favorites—but also his own improvisations and exciting jazz performances with Herbie Hancock. The 1982 footage centers on Gulda and features a three-way improvisation with Chick Corea and the prodigious Nicholas Economou (also known for his collaborations with Argerich)—it’s simply magnificent.
