Live recording of a concert celebrating the 150th anniversary of the beginning of immigration from Finland to North America. Sibelius & Cortekangas SACD Hybrid Edition by Vänskä & Minnesota Orchestra. This new Sibelius album by Osmo Vänskä and the Minnesota Orchestra is a live recording of a concert commemorating the 150th anniversary of the beginning of immigration from Finland to North America. The program included "Kullervo," in which Sibelius used an episode from the folk epic "Kalevala" to demonstrate the "Finnish" identity, "The Emigrants" by Olli Kortekangas, and "Finlandia" performed in a version for chorus and orchestra with lyrics by Koskenniemi Olli Cortekangas was the first to perform the piece. Olli Kortekangas is one of the most prominent composers working in Finland today. He studied with Rautavaara and Eero Hameenniemi at the Sibelius Academy and Dieter Schneebel in Berlin, and has over 140 works, including orchestral, instrumental, operatic, and music for children. The Emigrants is a 2014 work he composed on commission from the Minnesota Orchestra and Vänskä. The poems are taken from Cloud Birds and Echo & Lightning by Sheila Paczka, whose paternal and maternal grandfathers were both immigrants from Finland, and who has been the poet laureate of Duluth, Minnesota, since 2010. The four choral movements - "Two Worlds," "Resurrection," "The Man Who Lived in a Tree" (a cappella chorus), and "The Music We Breathe" - are connected by three orchestral "interludes" in a symmetrical structure. Clervo is Osmo Vänskä's second recording. The first album with the Lahti Symphony Orchestra (BIS1215), recorded in 2000 in the newly built Sibelius Hall, was highly acclaimed for its insightful performance of the deep world of "Kalevala" and became one of the reference discs for this work. The Minnesota Orchestra is joined in concert by the same mezzo-soprano Lilli Persikivi and the University of Helsinki Male Chorus (YL) as on the previous album, with Finnish baritone Tommi Hakala singing the cullervo.
