This highly anticipated new recording is a collection of Martineau's viola works, including the well-known \"Rhapsody Concerto,\" a duet with violin, and a viola sonata. The concerto is performed with the BBC Symphony Orchestra conducted by Jerzy Bielohlavek, the duet with Alexander Sitkovetsky, a thoroughbred in the classical music world, and the viola sonata with Katya Apekishcheva, who gave a recital in May 2014 in Japan that attracted much attention. The lineup is a splendid one.Born in the Czech Republic, Martineau (1890-1959) attended the Prague Conservatory and the Prague Organ School, but did not graduate until 1923, when he left for Paris, where he developed his own style of contemporary music and neoclassicism. He then emigrated to the United States in 1941 to avoid the rule of Nazi Germany. From this period, Martineau's music became established, and he left behind works backed by nationalism and lyricism. After World War II, he was invited to become a professor at the Prague Conservatory of Music, but was denied the opportunity to return to his native country due to the establishment of a leftist government. He died near Basel, Switzerland, on August 28, 1959. Martineau left numerous works in all genres, but this disc contains works with viola composed between 1947 and 1955, near the end of his life.All of these works are now important repertoire for the viola, and the Rhapsody Concerto is one of the few representative viola concertos.
