The first prize that year went to Miriam Fried, the first female winner in the history of the competition, now in its 20th year. Third place went to Hamao Fujiwara, followed by Zakhar Bron in twelfth place. Volkert won the fifth prize with a wonderful performance of Shostakovich's Violin Concerto No. 1 in the presence of the jury, which was led by Oistrakh, who had premiered the work, and after only two rehearsals with the orchestra, which was not enough time for a full performance. At the prize winners' concert, the orchestra performed a Bartók piece that they had recorded a few months earlier with Guillen's clear and poetic conducting. Folkert had been ill since the mid-1980s and died on July 2, 1992. This is the appearance of a rare record of a competition by a wonderful Belgian player.
