Under the direction of conductor Domenico Fama, who was also involved in the founding of the orchestra, the orchestra's performances are characterized by careful attention to the inner voices, bringing out complex expressions from string orchestra works that tend to sound simple. Sibelius: Improvisation Composed in 1894. Composed in 1894, this three-part work is a variation of the Improvisation for Piano, Op-5-5, composed the previous year, with Op-5-6 as the main part and Op-5-6 as the middle part. The main part has a mysterious figure with a weak instrument, so you can enjoy the divergence from the original piano piece. Sibelius: Romance Composed in 1904. The original title of this work, which is also used as the album title, was simply "Andante," but a friend persuaded him to change it to "Romance" because he thought it would not convey the charm of this catchy piece. It is a fine piece with an appealing and familiar musical theme. Britten: Simple Symphony Composed between 1933 and 1934, this piece was written when Britten was 20 years old, using music he wrote as a boy in his early teens as material. The material used was piano music, which was transformed by the use of two themes in each of the four movements. Barber: Serenade Composed in 1928. Barber was 18 years old and a student at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, and the original was a string quartet. Barber began composing at the precocious age of 7, and this Serenade, completed 11 years later, was the first work to bear a work number. Pelto: Lord, grant us peace Composed in 2004. This piece was written to commemorate the victims of the Madrid train bombings (193 dead, approximately 2,050 injured) caused by terrorists opposed to Spain's participation in the invasion of Iraq. The original was a four-voice piece, and several versions were subsequently published by Pelto himself. The work is impressive for its mournful beauty. (Nihon Shuppan Boeki)
