Composer and DJ Diskoria is a group that gained attention following the re-evaluation of “Pop Kreatif” (a genre similar to CityPop in Indonesia) in the early 2010s, and has been a driving force behind that boom. Characterized by their style of arranging ’70s and ’80s pop into modern, disco-inspired tracks, they have become a social phenomenon not only in Indonesia but around the world, fueled by the global retro and analog booms. Their physical releases have become extremely hard to come by—on par with those of WhiteShoes \u0026amp; The Couples Company—so it’s great news that, following their vinyl release, a CD version has been announced! A must-listen for fans of Suchmos, Mitsume, Lamp, and WhiteShoes \u0026amp; The Couples Company!! The album features numerous top-notch tracks with a Shibuya-kei vibe, including “Prahara Api Asmara,” which features full participation from the much-talked-about Mondo Gascaro, and “Hasrat Dan Jiwaku,” which features model Ayu Gani—a truly surprising choice! It’s as if the exhilaration you felt the first time you heard their signature tracks “C.H.R.I.S.Y.E.” and “SUARADISKO”—which are heavily played in Indonesian clubs—is coming back to life. While Diskoria has traditionally focused on retro and disco sounds, reinterpreting obscure Indonesian tracks, in recent years they’ve pursued originality, collaborating with artists and producers currently at the forefront of the scene—starting with Ricky Virgana of Mondo Gascaro, Ricky Virgana of WhiteShoes \u0026amp; The Couples Company, and many other artists and producers to create new tracks. This full-length album can truly be called the culmination of those efforts, offering a sound that’s distinctly different from their previous work. For example, the opening track, “TanahAirku (feat. Najwa Shihab),” is a heartwarming tribute to Indonesia; the birthday celebration track “Selamat Ulang Tahun” featuring the Bandung Jazz Orchestra, and the introspective “Flamboyanku” featuring jazz singer Danilla—all offer a charm unlike anything heard before, and it’s no exaggeration to say that these tracks elevate the album’s overall quality. The new track “Kilauan” comes highly recommended. Unlike previous Diskoria works, this track is somewhat unique—a superb proto-house tune I’d recommend to fans of Indonesian disco-boogie producer Midnight Runners (aka Munir). At the same time, it’s packed with the retro elements they’re known for. To capture the vibe of that era, it’s a top-notch track that blends the “glitz of Mellyana and Sandii from Makoto Kubota’s ’90s works” with the essence of “Sheila Majid’s timeless classics.” Put that way, you’ll definitely want to play it on repeat!
