John Wilson, who has long studied Puccini's scores, conducts his trusted Sinfonia of London in this collection of orchestral works. It stands apart from similar projects and is a work that orchestra fans will truly enjoy.\n\nThe works included are mainly from his early period. The Symphonic Prelude, written while he was studying under Ponchielli, has a very long, undulating melody reminiscent of Wagner's prelude to Act I of Lohengrin. The Symphonic Caprice, his graduation work, seems to anticipate the opening of the masterpiece La Bohème, written ten years later. The three minuets and the \"Chrysanthemum\" theme would later be reused in his breakthrough work, Manon Lescaut. Puccini's first opera, Le Villi, was submitted to a composition competition. Though it didn't win, the major publisher Ricordi recognized its quality, purchased the score, and this marked the beginning of a long and fruitful collaboration. His second opera, Edgar, though not a commercial success, boasts a superbly crafted orchestral score.Puccini's signature style is evident even in small pieces such as scherzos, trios, and adagetti. Rather than taking the common approach of arranging well-known preludes and intermezzos, John Wilson conveys the true value of Puccini's orchestration by selecting works from his early years that demonstrate a high level of orchestral skill and presenting them as symphonic works. At the same time, he pays close attention to the sweet melodies and dramatic atmosphere unique to Puccini's works. Among the recorded pieces, the most famous is the Intermezzo from Act III of Manon Lescaut, which builds to a climax as it shifts from sweetness to a sense of impending tragedy. The uplifting feeling of this scene is extremely powerful, thanks in part to the orchestra's skill.\n\nThe sound, recorded by the renowned CHANDOS team of producer Brian Pidgeon and engineer Ralph Cousins at St. Augustine's Church in Kilburn, the orchestra's de facto home, is delicate, mellow, precise, and majestic. This is a must-listen album even for orchestra fans who only know Puccini's \"Nessun dorma\".
