He also worked with the bands of Hampton Haws, Teddy Edwards, and Willie Bobo. This one, Williams' first leader album, was recorded live at a club in LA\/Long Beach. The album features Leroy Vinegar on bass, Charles Owens on sax and fl, Dwight Dickerson on p, and many other jazzmen who are also featured on his \"Black Jazz\" label releases. The jazz funk \"Sandance\" that opens the album is full of vital power.The fat beats that Williams and Vinegar deliver seem to represent the joy of the musicians. Leon Russell's \"This Masquarado\" is covered in a melancholy Latin jazz style. The second half of the song is a must-listen, as it builds up to a feverish, hard-hitting climax. The thrilling last song is a cover of Coltrane's \"Impressions\". Vinegar's bass, buzzing and groaning in the aggressive, fast tempo, is overwhelming.
