He was music director of the Bavarian State Opera from 1952 to 1954, and in 1954, he shook the Metropolitan Opera. In 1961, he succeeded Beecham as Chief Conductor of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, a position he held until 1975, when he was reappointed after a brief hiatus. He held this position until 1975. Kempe's untimely death the following year makes this recording of Mahler's 4th Symphony from 1957 a rarity. Kempe eventually took over the program prepared by Bruno Walter, who had been ill at the time, and the performance was highly acclaimed, but has never been released. He had an extraordinary enthusiasm for German repertoire, especially the works of Richard Strauss, and gave excellent performances of these works, but Mahler was not to his liking, and there are very few recordings of Mahler. It would be difficult to evaluate Kempe's Mahler on this recording, but Mahler fans should rejoice in the fact that they have been given a wonderful recording.
