Ruth Gipps (1921-1999) studied at the Royal College of Music and Durham University, where she studied with Gordon Jacob and Rafe Vaughan Williams. He was a virtuoso on piano and oboe, and after the age of 33, due to a hand injury, he devoted himself to composing and conducting. He has left a solid mark on the history of British music by demonstrating a strong individuality in the then still male-dominated music world.
