Description:

Cat Power, the "Noble Queen of Indie Rock" for her unparalleled voice and songwriting, releases her latest album, "Covers"! Sean Marshall, a.k.a. Cat Power, has been described as the "Noble Queen of Indie Rock" for his unique presence over the past 30 years of his career. Her inimitable voice and songwriting have influenced a new generation of artists including Lana Del Rey, Craylo, Sucker Mommy, Phoebe Bridgers, Julien Baker, and Angel Olsen. In her career to date, she has released two covers albums, "The Covers Record" and "Jukebox," which have been highly acclaimed as original albums by bringing out new charm in the original songs. The third and latest in this series of covers, "Covers," is released on the Domino label. The album looks back at songs that have influenced him from childhood to the present, and each song is deeply connected to a personal memory. Billie Holiday's "I'll Be Seeing You" was a favorite of his grandmother's, and Kitty Wells' "It Wasn't God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels" was a fateful encounter when he found a box full of cassette tapes as a teenager. It is also filled with memories of the shivering excitement of hearing Iggy Pop's "Endless Sea" in the 1986 film "Dog in Space" with Michael Hutchence, and of spending my twenties as a poor artist in New York City, paying what little money I had for the jukebox at Mona's Bar and listening to "Here Comes a Regular" by The Replacements. Marshall's memories of listening to the Replacements' "Here Comes a Regular" on the jukebox at Mona's Bar when he was in his twenties as a poor artist in New York City are filled with memories. Marshall not only covers iconic rock and roll artists such as Nico and Nick Cave, but also brings his uniquely powerful vocals and sophisticated arranging skills to the songs of contemporary artists, such as the rebellious spirit of Dead Man's Bones' "Pa Pa Power," the lush, melancholic "I'll Be Your Friend," and the haunting "I'll Be Your Friend. He also masterfully captures the rebellious spirit of Dead Man's Bones' "Pa Pa Power" and the fantastical atmosphere of Lana Del Rey's "A White Mustang. For Covers, Marshall, a constantly evolving artist, worked on a modification of her own song "Hate" (from 2006's "The Greatest"), in which she sings, "I hate myself so much I want to die." According to Marshall, she has always felt "unwilling" about the track, so she decided to rework it under the title "Unhate".
