Description:

Today, blacks are a force to be reckoned with in the opera world, but almost 100 years ago, it would have been unthinkable for them to sing on the big stage. Take Marian Anderson (1897-1993), for example. She showed talent from an early age and sang in church choirs, but blatant racial discrimination prevented her from even entering music school, and when she finally made her professional debut, her songs were never broadcast on radio stations. However, in 1939 she gave a historic concert at Lincoln Center, and in 1955 she finally made her debut at the Metropolitan Opera. But did you know that there were great prima donnas before her? What anguish hides behind Paul Robeson's smile? This film shows a succession of singers who, despite the harsh fate that befell them, were captivated by the charm of singing, and it also gives a full picture of the audience that was captivated by them and their music. It also includes footage of their many monumental concerts. This is a wonderful documentary that will overwhelm you with their resilient spirit, singing ability, and natural sense of rhythm. [Comment courtesy of Naxos Japan.
