Rossini went to Vienna, where the opera was scheduled to be performed from the time of its composition, and never returned to Naples. The first performances in Naples and Vienna were both successful, but when the opera was premiered in Paris in 1826, Rossini changed some scenes and increased the difficulty of singing the role of Ilo, Zelmyra's husband, in order to enhance the singers of the time, since the singers had been replaced. As was typical of the period, there is no overture, and when the curtain rises, a tense scene suddenly unfolds, drawing the audience into the story.
