Rubinstein, Anton (1829-1894)

Anton Rubinshtein (1829-1894, sometimes spelled Rubinstein) was one of the greatest Russian musicians of the 19th century. He was a virtuoso piano player (his brother Nikolai was also a great pianist), and as a young man he gave concerts throughout Europe and Russia, where he made friends with Chopin and Liszt. As a composer, he was also extensively active, founding the St. Petersburg Conservatory, Russia's first professional music education institution, and is known as the founder of the Russian Music Society. However, due to his Jewish origins (his family converted to the Russian Orthodox Church when he was two years old), he was at odds with the Russian Five, who were active at the same time, and his works were rarely performed during his lifetime. However, the Russian flavor that pervades this Symphony No. 5 is proof of how much he himself loved Russia. Naxos Japan
