Fritz Kreisler, Hugo Kreisler
Description:
In World War I, Kreisler participated in the war as a lieutenant in the army, but was seriously wounded and discharged from the army. He returned to New York and resumed performing, but for various reasons his activities did not take off, and he eventually returned to Europe, touring the Far East including Japan in 1923, and from 1924 to 1934, he was based in Berlin. This seventh collection is a collection of recordings from such a tumultuous period. Of particular importance is the ensemble with the talented cellist Hugo, Kreisler's younger brother by nine years, which can be heard on the HMV recording. The sound, full of rich cantabile, which seems to have been influenced by Fritz, is very typically Viennese. A wonderfully breathy performance. The recording on the Victor Talking Machine with pianist Lamson was the first electrical recording, and although there were some failed takes, indicating some trial and error with the new system, the rich sound of the 1733 Stradivari was recorded in its entirety. The rich sound of the 1733 Stradivari was recorded in its entirety. Naxos Japan
