Description:
SACD hybrid disc. Bach's "Musical Offering" and "14 Canons" performed by members of the Bach Collegium Japan led by Masaaki Suzuki. The "Musical Offering," based on a single theme said to have been presented by King Frederick II of Prussia, was established in Leipzig in the summer of 1747. This collection is one of Bach's most highly polyphonic works, and the orderly and enigmatic impression of the score has been described as "geometry in sound. The "14 Canons" are 14 canons based on the bass part of the theme of the Goltberg Variations, and are estimated to have been composed between 1747 and August 1748. Starting with the first two-part canon based on the theme and its retrograde form, followed by the four-part double canon based on the theme, counter-subject, and their transposed forms (No. 5), the five-part double canon on the fundamental (No. 11), and the six-part triple canon (No. 13), the 14 pieces in total are interesting works showing a variety of forms. The Sonata in G major, BWV 1038, is an impressive work with a lively second movement fugato reminiscent of the last movement of the Brandenburg Concerto No. 3, and a third movement with a melancholy duet between flute and violin.Enjoy this superb ensemble of BCJ members led by Masaaki Suzuki. Imported with Japanese obi and commentary.
