This is Rattle's second recording of the complete Sibelius cycle, having previously recorded the complete works with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra from 1981 to 1987. This Sibelius Cycle with the Berlin Philharmonic has been a desire of Rattle's since his appointment as chief conductor in 2002, and was recorded in time for the 2015 Sibelius Year.
