Felix Samond was born in London in November 1888 to a baritone father and pianist mother, and was trained by the composer and viola player Frank Bridge. In 1922, he moved to the U.S., where he continued to perform and was highly regarded as a great teacher, Samond's students included Leonard Rose, Bernard Greenhouse, and Tibor de Machula, who went on to become principal cellist of the Berlin Philharmonic and Concertgebouw Orchestra. This CD is a collection of Samond's duo recordings with piano made for Columbia between 1926 and 1930, and is the first reissue of these recordings on LP and CD. It conveys Samond's performance, which was described as \"a picture of an English gentleman\" with its beautiful sound and graceful style.Bruch's Kol Nidrei has a cut that was made to fit on two SP discs when it was first released.
