Carminola and A. Beye. It’s surprising enough that their latest album has been released on the charismatic French label Alpha, but the composer they’ve chosen is Tartini—a master who, while best known for his “Devil’s Trill,” is still not widely recognized for his true merit even in the 21st century. This album explores the true nature of this little-known great composer—whose 250th anniversary of his death falls in 2020—while also featuring newly discovered works.\n\nPiran, in present-day Slovenia, where Tartini was born, was part of the Venetian Republic at the time, just like the ancient northern Italian city of Padua, where he would go on to be active for many years until the end of his life. It is, so to speak, inevitable that the Venice Baroque Orchestra would take an interest in this composer. According to its director, Marcon, they have been working on this project for three years. The soloist, Shiranosian, is an Armenian-French early music performer who is highly recommended by leading figures such as Reinhard Goebel, director of Musica Antica Cologne’s Reinhard Goebel and Jos van Immerseel—and has recorded sonatas by Tartini and Leclair in a duo with Immerseel for Alpha (Alpha 255). From the many violin concertos available, the selection strikes a good balance between major and minor keys, spanning his early to late periods; the newly discovered works are late-period pieces that deserve special attention precisely because of this commemorative year.
