Cherubini, Luigi (1760-1842)

Intense tension! Warlikowski and Ruse team up for Monet's "Medea" by Cherubini! Luigi Cherubini, a Florentine-born, Paris-based composer, is probably best known for his masterpiece "Medea," popularized by Maria Callas in her singing. In fact, the original "Medea" was in French, first performed in 1797. It is not only different in language, but also written in the style of an operatic comique with spoken dialogue, and, as was the case at the end of the French Revolution, it has a very strong story and music, and is somewhat different from the "Medea" as generally performed, which was greatly modified in the early 20th century. The production included here is a performance of "Medea" at the Théâtre de la Monnaie in September 2011. The stage performance by Krzysztof Warlikowski, a Polish-born director who is very popular in France and Belgium, was a big hit.Warlikowski's productions are known for their strong theatricality, and "Mede" here is another example, taking the world of Greek mythology and turning it into a raw, contemporary love-hate drama. Mede is a black-clad woman with tattoos all over her body, and when she appears on stage, she is dressed in a rock 'n' roll outfit as shown in the jacket photo. Jazon is an artist-like second-timer with dreadlocks and long hair. The story is that the husband of this unlikely couple betrays his wife and marries Dirce, the beautiful daughter of a wealthy Creon. At first glance, this is a novel and exciting play, but behind the scenes, one can sense the strong feeling for the Mede as conveyed from Euripides' original story through Cherubini. The singers are very strong. Mede is sung by Nadja Michaela, the best singer of the day when it comes to women of passion. Her singing and acting have a strong impact. The indecisive Jazon is Kurt Strait, an American tenor who is popular as a Mozart tenor. As Dirce, the poor girl who is finally killed by Mede, is Belgian soprano Hendrikje van Kerkhoffe. She is a beautiful woman with a clear and beautiful voice, and also intelligent. Her acting is also excellent in her almost underwear-like costume. Vincent Le Texier, as Creon, is a veteran French bass-baritone. His voice and appearance have an austere air. The two sons of the silent Medet also give good performances. Backing them was Les Talents Lilique, conducted by Christophe Rousset. The tension-filled performance, as is typical of Rousset, makes us realize how innovative Cherubini's music was at the time. The high standard of balance between stage, performance, and singing in "Mede" will change your conventional view of Kelbini. King International
