To resonate with this world, \"The Great Absence\" is heavily influenced by the social landscape from the end of 2020 to 2021, when this project was conceived. When the pandemic's reign began, I felt buoyed by the impact of its sudden extraordinary nature, but after a year, I became accustomed to the extraordinary landscape and my mind was quietened by the reality that I had no choice but to accept, \"What wave is next? At the heart of this story is the protagonist's journey to find something by wandering the maze with the clues left behind after his father, with whom he had an estranged relationship to begin with, suddenly suffers from dementia. There is neither his anger nor his grief over his father's transformation. The camera follows the protagonist, hoping that at the end of a road movie of some sort, we would be able to grasp a certain touch of human existence. What kind of film music should accompany such a work? I had several online discussions with Koji Itoyama. He had grasped the core of the story and the atmosphere that would flow through it when he read the script. After filming, I edited each sequence, which was about 15 minutes long, and shared it with Mr. Itoyama. The candidate for the main theme that he received a short time later already had the look of this \"great absence\" at that point. From the beginning, it was a shared thought that we did not want the music to represent the emotions of the characters. On the other hand, I also did not like the mockery of counterpoint, a method of creating emotion through irrelevance to the picture. What I wanted was for the music to literally blend in with all the elements that make up the world of the story and deepen the universe depth. That is why I wanted the music to resonate with the noise of the city's hustle and bustle in one scene, and to trace my finger across the unsettling silence of the room in another. To all of my requests, musician Koji Itoyama responded with answers that easily exceeded my imagination. And when this music was merged with the 35mm film images and the precisely designed film soundtrack, the film took on the atmosphere of the years 2020-2021, a time that is still stuck in the corners of everyone's memory.I believe that one of the major reasons why the film's music has been honored with awards and prizes at the Toronto International Film Festival, the San Sebastian International Film Festival, and many other film festivals around the world is because of this film music. I am very happy to have been able to work not only with the music from the film, but also with the soundtrack CD, which has been mastered as a soundtrack.
