Live recordings of Eddie Harris from 1988!

Eddie Harris (1934–1996) was a Chicago-born trumpeter, tenor saxophonist, electric pianist, and organist. His signature tunes include “Freedom Jazz Dance” and “Listen Here,” made famous by Miles Davis. Throughout his career, he was active in both jazz and rhythm & blues.
On June 21, 1969, Eddie Harris met singer and pianist Les McCann on the stage of an old casino in Montreux, and together they set off a musical fireworks display unlike anything the jazz world had ever seen. Positioned at the intersection of jazz, funk, and soul, McCann and Eddie Harris actually created a new style, and “Compared to What” became an anthem of the civil rights movement.
About 20 years later, in January 1988, a concert by a quartet led by Eddie Harris at the “Fabrique” in Altona, Hamburg, exuded the same fiery atmosphere as back then. Recorded in Hamburg on a cold winter’s day, the NDR release recreates the excitement that erupted in Montreux.
Born in Chicago, the birthplace of many top-tier jazz musicians, he was equally adept at the piano and vibraphone as well as the saxophone. He also possessed a side as an inventor, such as electrifying the saxophone and replacing the standard brass mouthpieces of trumpets and trombones with wooden ones designed for the saxophone. On this album, you can enjoy his piano playing and his trumpet performances featuring woodwind mouthpieces.
The album includes "Freedom Jazz Dance," a signature piece and a jazz standard from the 1960s when freedom was paramount, as well as "Eddie Who?," a track titled with self-deprecating humor out of frustration at his relative obscurity. Don’t miss the performances by his talented companions: percussionist Norman Farlinton, bassist Ray Peterson, and guitarist Daryl Thompson.

Tracklisting:

1.Blue Bossa
2.La Carnival
1.Freedom Jazz Dance
2.Ice Cream
1.Ambidextrous
2.Vexatious Progressions
1.Eddie Who?
2.Get on Down
