Mahler (1860-1911)

Long-awaited release of Mahler's "Song of the Earth" by GielenIn 2011, the 100th anniversary of Mahler's death, the SWR Symphony Orchestra conducted by Michael Gielen will present "Song of the Earth". The Song of the Earth" was inspired by his friend Theobald Pollak's introduction of "The Flute of China," a collection of Chinese poems edited and translated by Hans Beethoven, and Mahler's strong fascination with the ineradicable beauty of the background of this collection led him to create his own unique worldview, including his long-held pessimism and view of life and death. The work resonates and projects his own worldview, including his long-held pessimism and view of life and death, and was written with a free imagination.Mahler is known for the close connection between his songs and symphonies, as evidenced by the allusion between his song cycle "The Child's Wonderful Horn" and the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th symphonies, but as the title "Songs of the Earth" clearly indicates, this work is unmistakably an essential assimilation of Lieder and symphonic music. The entire work is composed of six pieces of music. The entire work consists of six movements, each sung alternately by a tenor and a contralto (or baritone) soloist, which is also unique. At the time of the recording, Gielen and the SWR Symphony Orchestra had already completed a complete cycle of Mahler's symphonies, including Nos. 1 through 9 and the Adagio from No. 10, which was a compilation of performances made between 1988 and 2003. The complete Mahler symphonies, including the Ninth and Tenth Adagios from the First Symphony. The "Song of the Earth" recorded in 1992, the year before the recording of No. 7, for the odd movement sung by Yerzalem, and in 2002 for the even movement sung by Kalish, the same year as the recording of No. 1 at the end of the series. The "Ode to the Earth" also reminds me of Klemperer's recording of the "Ode to the Earth," but in each of Gielen's series of recordings, he has brought out a great deal of information from the work with a clear approach that maintains the balance of each voice part, and the "Ode to the Earth" is no exception. The same excellent results can be expected from "Songs of the Earth" as well. The two soloists are both experienced Mahler performers.Born in Germany in 1956, Kalisch has participated in Gielen's Mahler Series recordings of No. 2 in 1996 and No. 3 in 1997, and also sang with great emotion in "Songs in Memory of a Lost Child" in 1998. Tenor Yerusalem was born in Oberhausen, Germany in 1940. He is a specialist in works by Mahler, Strauss, and Wagner, and has also recorded "Ode to the Earth" with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra under Barenboim in 1991 and with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra under Levine in 1992. Gielen is known for his frequent performances of "Song of the Earth," and it is a pleasure to finally release this recording at the perfect time for the anniversary. King International
