Description:
This is a rare complete recording of opera buffa works by Gazzaniga, a composer active in Venice at the same time as Mozart. Italian composer Giuseppe Gazzaniga (1743 - 1818) is best known for his opera "Don Giovanni," which is said to have influenced Mozart's opera of the same name. It is said that the author of the libretto, Da Ponte, studied Gazzaniga's operas and wrote the libretto for "Don Giovanni" based on them. Another of Gazzaniga's operas that enjoyed great success is the opera buffa "L'Isola d'Alcina" (The Island of Alcina), which is being released this time. First performed in Venice in 1772, it quickly became very popular. The libretto is by Giovanni Bertati and is based on Ludovico Ariosto's epic poem "Orlando furioso" (The mad Orlando). The story follows four men of different nationalities (Spanish, German, French, and English) who arrive on the mysterious island of the legendary sorceress Alcina and are subjected to all kinds of tests of reason and temptations in the course of the story.It is lavishly interspersed with powerful arias and duets, and contains moments of genuine emotion that are both comic (especially the English and the Germans are exaggerated) and lyrical. The L'Arte del Mondo, conducted by Werner Ehrhardt, who has made a name for himself with his revivals and recordings of obscure operas and oratorios, and his talented singers contribute to an ideal recreation of the work.
