Mordecai," their first third album in two years, is now available, with vocals introduced on nearly every song and a bold deepening of the band's sound. Houston-based trio (Laura Lee Ochoa on bass, Mark Speer on guitar, and Donald "DJ" Johnson on drums) Khruangbin will release their new album, Mordechai, in association with Night Time Stories, on Dead It will be released on June 26, 2020 on Oceans. This is the follow-up to 2018's highly acclaimed Con Todo El Mundo, and the band also released a collaborative EP with Leon Bridges, Texas Sun, earlier this year. The lead single from the album is "Time (You and I)," and the video for the song was created by Felix Heyes & Josh R.R. King Khruangbin has always been multilingual. Khruangbin has always been multilingual, weaving together in delicate harmonies musical languages as far apart as East Asian surf rock, Persian funk, and Jamaican dub. On his third album, Mordechai, however, vocals are featured on nearly every track. It's a risky and significant shift to turn Khruangbin's ecstatic sound directly into an emotional sensation without losing their nomadic wanderlust spirit, but all of this began when they returned to Texas from touring, where Khruangbin has been on the road for nearly three years with "The Universe Smiles Upon You and Con Todo El Mundo, along with two acclaimed albums, and continued to tour throughout North and South America, Europe, and Southeast Asia for nearly three and a half years, through the summer of 2019. He then returned to his studio on his farm in Barton, Texas, to begin work on his third album, but slowed it down for a time. During that time, Ochoa went hiking with a family of strangers led by her father, Mordechai, and was enlightened and reborn. And she wrote down a lot of words in a notebook. When the band began to compile the songs that would make up the album, they found a space in each song that only the vocalist could fill, and they turned to Ochoa's notebook. Khruangbin had written lyrics before, on songs like "Friday Morning" and "Como Te Quiero," but unlike that time, Ochoa knew that this time he had something to say. And indeed, the words that needed to be said were used in the album. As a result, the sound was given great depth as the words rang out. And the sound, which seemed to incorporate Pakistani, Korean, and West African music with Indian chanting boxes and Congolese syncopated guitars, was even more content to celebrate the eclectic city that nurtured them, Texas. Country, zydeco, trap rap, avant-garde opera, and more could be heard nightly in this cultural exchange. In the years away from Texas, the members of Khruangbin sometimes felt like they were swimming in water. But with "Mordechai," they were able to calmly return to the surface, take a breath, look around, and find themselves again. This work is like a snapshot taken on a great journey. Because of its impermanence, the moment is beautiful. But the memories come back again and again, and each time they speak to us more vividly than the one before.

Tracklisting:

.First Class
.Time (You and I)
.Connaissais de Face
.Father Bird, Mother Bird
.If There is No Question
.Pelota
.One to Remember
.Dearest Alfred
.So We Won't Forget
.Shida
