This Iphigenia stands as his masterpiece of opera seria. The libretto was written by Marco Cortellini (1719-1777), who also penned Mozart's The Impostor Gardener. The libretto is filled with dramatic developments: Iphigenia, bearing the deep psychological wound of nearly being sacrificed by her own father; the mystical sibling love between her and her brother Orestes; and the surging emotions at the moment of reunion between Iphigenia and Orestes, who had been held captive by a tyrant. Traetta masterfully set the tension of this story to music.Traetta's vocal style, situated at the intersection of Neapolitan bel canto and Gluck's operatic reforms, is not a display of empty technique; each melody and ornament is imbued with genuine, sincere emotion.\n\nTraetta passed away in Venice on April 6, 1779. Around that time in Paris, the opera controversy between Gluck and Niccolò Piccinni (a composer of the Neapolitan school like Traetta) was intensifying.
