He possessed remarkable talent as an organist and composed pieces on the theme of “nature,” but above all, his name endures today thanks to this “musical depiction of nature”—which could also be called a “Pastoral Symphony.” While the very existence of this piece is sometimes mentioned as an afterthought when discussing Beethoven’s “Pastoral,” there are few opportunities to actually hear it performed. This recording is intended for such fans. The titles of each movement are unmistakably reminiscent of Beethoven himself. While the “Storm” may lack a bit of its usual intensity, there’s no doubt that this work is fascinating in its own right. As for the nature of the relationship between Beethoven and Knecht… we’ll leave that to your imagination.
