Each piece consists of 42 variations of the basic sequence of notes from Schoenberg's \"Piano Suite,\" with each of the 504 notes (42 x 12) as a starting point for a unique chord.Each piece, like Beethoven's later bagatelle collections, is a highly condensed miniature, lasting from a few seconds to five minutes at most, and often composed using only two or three distinguishing elements: repetitions, melodic lines, intervals, alternations, rests, trills, melodies, chords, staccatos, and legato. The pianist chooses the piece he wants to play.
