US large-ensemble jazz group Either\/Orchestra returns to Ethiopia! An ambitious work featuring Armenian-Ethiopian composer Nerses Narbandian. Highly recommended for fans of Ethiopian jazz and folk music alike!\n\nFormed in 1985 in Cambridge, Massachusetts by saxophonist and composer Russ Garson, the 10-piece Either\/Orchestra (hereafter E\/O) is known for boldly fusing tradition, experimentation, and global collaboration, establishing a unique position in jazz history. Equal parts bebop, avant-garde, and punk DIY spirit, the ensemble has served as a training ground for future stars such as John Medeski, Matt Wilson, Miguel Zenón, and Jarrell Shaw, releasing numerous critically acclaimed albums including the Grammy-nominated Calculus of Pleasure.\n\n\n\nIn the mid-1990s, E\/O began exploring the rich soundscape of Ethiopian music, developing innovative collaborations with Mulatu Astatke, the pioneer of Ethiopian jazz, saxophone legend Getachew Mekleya, and vocalists Mahmood Ahmed and Alemayehu Eshete. Their groundbreaking album, éthiopiques 20: Live in Addis, became the only American band featured in this renowned series and was acclaimed worldwide. Now, celebrating their 40th anniversary, E\/O is releasing a new album for the first time in a long while. This time, they have taken on the music of the little-known Armenian-Ethiopian composer Nerses Narbandian. Born into the Narbandian family who migrated to Ethiopia in the mid-1920s, he is known for establishing the golden age of Ethiopian music from the 1940s onward. His contribution to the brass-like timbre that significantly boosted the international fame of Ethiopian groove is widely acknowledged.\n\n\n\nE\/O finally returns after a hiatus due to the pandemic. To borrow the words of The Philadelphia Inquirer, this album \"honors the past while embracing the future,\" carrying on the tradition of big band jazz that transcends every boundary and time.
