This release features six works by composers who have been active in recent years: Robert Buckley, Carlos Simon, Kevin Valczyk, Cindy McTee, James M. Stevenson, and Bruce Broughton. Opening the program is Robert Buckley's Undercurrents. The work was commissioned by the Canadian Navy Naden Band. The composition was inspired by the image of schools of fish swimming with the currents of the sea and birds flying with the currents of the air. The melody seems to float away from each ensemble for a moment, but is quickly pulled back into the ensemble, like a school of fish or birds momentarily separated from their companions, but quickly rejoining the group. The title tune is James M. Stevenson's Trumpet Concerto No. 3 \"Hope\" with trumpet player: Ryan Anthony.Soloist Ryan Anthony used to be a member of the Canadian Brass, and many of you may have heard his excellent performances. While the first and second movements are chaotic, the third movement is bright and shiny, as the movement name \"Speranza,\" which means hope in Italian, suggests, and the sound of Ryan Anthony's trumpet is remarkable. The sound of Ryan Anthony's trumpet is also a highlight of this collection, which is full of charm and brings out the best of each piece.
