The German pianist is joined by four euphoniums, a trombone quartet, flutist Anna-Lena Schnabel, and Michel Godard on the rarely used brass \"serpent,\" in a work that blurs the line between the end of improvisation and the beginning of composition. Symphonic passages intersect with complex counterpoint, pastoral nuances are contrasted with contemporary textures, and each voice in the ensemble plays an independent role in the overall composition.
