The first single from the album, "U&Me," is one of the most beautiful and honest alt-J songs to date. The song was written in between soundchecks for a world tour, but when the band returned to London and listened back to the recording, they felt it was their most dynamic work to date. The songs had a natural momentum to them, so we thought it best to just let it come out. We were just there," frontman Joe Newman says of the song. Gus Unger-Hamilton explains that the song is about "going to festivals with your best friends, having a good time, feeling togetherness, and the feeling that there's nothing better in life. The music video, which evokes precious memories, was directed by Gus' brother, Prosper Unger-Hamilton, and is the first alt-J video to feature all of the band members.Compared to the previous album "RELAXER", "THE DREAM" is a more realistic album, and was partly inspired by the current world, which has been hit by various catastrophes even before the spread of the coronavirus. The world now seems to be in a strange dream, and I wish people would wake up from this dream as soon as possible - a beautiful and dark story of dream and reality as depicted by alt-J.
