A pupil of Freitas Blanco, he wrote colorful works incorporating Portuguese folk dances. 6 symphonies are well known, but he also wrote many other orchestral and chamber works, the complete works of which are still unknown. The symphonic overtures and piano concertos on this album are all world premiere recordings. Starting with his first orchestral work, the Symphonic Overture, this album offers a variety of works, following the years of composition from 1946 to 1973. While the first three works and the piano concerto are written for large orchestras, the remaining four works are all written for small or wind instruments, and all are based on Portuguese folk songs. The soloist in the piano concerto is Goran Filipetz, who is well-known for his Liszt works. He plays this technical piece effortlessly, as if you can see his fingers running freely over the keyboard.
