Orfeo, a Thracian bard, goes to the underground underworld in pursuit of his wife, Eurydice, who has died from a poisonous snake bite. When Orfeo arrives at Plutone, the lord of the underworld, he asks for permission to bring his wife back to earth. Pluto, with the help of his wife Proserpina, agrees to Orfeo's request on the condition that he never look back at his wife until they are on the surface of the earth. In 1607, Monteverdi's \"Orfeo\" was premiered in Mantova, and is regarded as the first masterpiece of the newly born \"opera\" genre. This disc features \"Orfeo,\" recorded live at the Opéra-Comique in Paris in June 2021 by the master of old music, Jordi Savard, who led Le Concert des Nations. This is the second video recording of the same work by Savard (the previous one was made in 2002 at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona). Luciana Mancini, who is very active in the Italian classical music scene, plays Euridice, and Marc Moillon, a French talent, plays Orfeo. Julio Zanazi, who played Orfeo 19 years ago, appears as Orfeo's father, Apollo, in this video.Directed by Pauline Bale, the stage is simple but impressive, with the singers and dancers bringing crimson flowers into an empty space to represent the world above ground and the monochrome stage design to represent the world below ground. The rich singing ensemble and Savard's deepened musical compositions bring fresh life to this work, which can be considered the origin of \"opera\".
