As an oboist, conductor, and composer, Holliger has long been a great admirer of Schumann, and in that sense, this is a project that he has put a great deal of effort into. The most outstanding feature of the performances is the clarity of texture without any muddiness in the sound, and conductor Holliger's skill is evident. The third program is a combination of two works composed and revised during Schumann's tenure as music director in Düsseldorf, which share the characteristic of being performed seamlessly throughout.The first symphony in the series (AU97677) was performed from the 1841 version, the so-called first draft, which is different from the usual version, but the performance here is from the more commonly known 1851 version. The Cello Concerto, composed in 1850, the year before the Fourth Symphony was revised, is not a showy work, but it is an intimate dialogue between the solo cello and orchestra that is full of poetic sentiment. The soloist, Oren Shevlin, was born in Oldham, England in 1969. After studying with Raphael Sommer, Boris Pergamenschikov, and Frans Hermershon, he won second prize at the 1996 Paulo International Cello Competition in Helsinki and second prize at the 2001 Rostropovich Cello Competition in Paris. Since 1998, he has been the principal cellist of the WDR Symphony Orchestra in Cologne.The instrument used is an 1850 English John Frederick Lott.
