The 25-member ensemble, consisting of eight vocalists and 17 instrumentalists, performed the piece in extremely pure sound quality so that every note of the score could be heard. In addition to the high degree of recognition of the voices, which is one of the major advantages of small ensemble performances, the organ sound played by Mortensen is truly pleasant. The John Passion is often used for anti-Semitism because of its Passion story, and in the past, there were not a few performances that exaggerated and emphasized such parts. However, Mortensen has always approached the work objectively and expressed the information in the score with sincerity, thus bringing out clearly the many symbolic chorales, figura (rhetorical passages), and melisma (technical passages) that are unique to the John Passion. The melisma in particular brings a wonderful sense of mobility to the performance, which leads to a performance that rejects subject-matter distortion, emphasizes information, and expresses the content of the work lyrically.Such a performance makes one think about the theory of a symmetrical structure with the 22nd piece as the central point. The eight voices consist of a soprano, alto (countertenor), tenor, and bass, each with a \"concertino\" who also sings solo, and two \"ripienos\" who basically join the chorus. The arrangement in the chorus is as follows: the high voices are on the left, and the low voices on the right. The 17 instrumentalists consist of three 1st violins, three 2nd violins, one viola, one cello (gamba), one double bass, two flutes, two oboes, one bassoon, one theorbo, one harpsichord, and one organ \u0026amp; conducting. The booklet includes a discussion of the John Passion by Michael Marissen in English and German. Interesting content includes references to the connection between anti-Semitism and the John Passion.
