Having grown up watching his father, a historian, he went on to become a jurist and political scientist. He participated as an observer for the German side during the negotiations for the Treaty of Versailles in 1919. At the same time, he was an accomplished pianist and composer, and is also known for demonstrating the artistic talent he inherited from his grandfather by publishing poetry and writing opera librettos. The songs included in this album are love songs inspired by Magdalena (Lena) Schoch, who became both his student and close friend.
