Friedrich Schnapp, who was once in charge of Furtwängler's broadcast recordings, said that Brahms was the greatest of all Furtwängler's performances. These two pieces are famous for being the most dramatic and amplitude-rich of his multiple recordings, and our series released a reissue from the Melodia LP (GS-2107, out of print) in 2014. The LP reissue has its own unique flavor, but the tape reissue is superior in terms of overall information content. The mastering was done by professional equipment throughout the entire process, as in the past, to ensure the highest quality. In the commentary, Masami Saito (1911-1967), who was active as a correspondent in Europe during the war, wrote a memoir about listening to Furtwängler in Stockholm in 1943, the same year as this performance.
