After serving as music director at the local Cathedral of Santa Maria Maggiore, he worked in northern Italy, including Ferrara, and after serving as assistant music director at St. Mark’s Basilica in Venice, he was appointed music director in 1685. He wielded significant influence in the Venetian music scene, mentoring 18th-century composers such as Albinoni and Lotti; it is believed that the young Vivaldi also benefited from his guidance. Although Legrenzi is known today for his operas and instrumental works, much of his output consists of church music. Legrenzi developed the musical techniques advocated and practiced by Monteverdi to evoke emotions and passions in the listener. This recording features representative works of Legrenzi’s church music.\nLegrenzi’s “Compline with Litany of the Blessed Virgin Mary and Antiphons,” published in 1662 as Opus 7, was dedicated to Count Ippolito Bentivoglio, who presided over the Accademia dello , which he had presided over. Compline is one of the daily Christian liturgical services known as the Divine Office; it is the prayer recited before sleep to conclude the day. Legrenzi’s Opus 7 is a collection of works intended for this service, centered on psalm settings also sung during Vespers (evening prayer), with antiphons dedicated to the Virgin Mary—such as the “Salve Regina”—inserted throughout, and concluding with the Litany of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The works are primarily written in the style of five-voice religious concertos or motets, often accompanied by a basso continuo. In this recording, the order of the pieces has been rearranged from the published score to maximize the musical effect.\nCountertenor Ensemble Polyharmonique, led by Alexander Schneider, is an early music ensemble specializing in 17th- and 18th-century music; it has earned worldwide acclaim particularly for its performances of 17th-century German church music, such as that of Schütz. They have released numerous recordings on labels such as cpo, Raumklang, and Aparte, and have won several international awards, including the Diapason d’Or. Here, a group of six singers—including Schneider himself—and continuo players deliver a captivating performance of Legrenzi’s works, with clear, resonant harmonies that seamlessly integrate text and music, effectively conveying the beauty of the music.\nNaxos Japan\u003c\/p\u003e","brand":"CPO","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":53696775061793,"sku":"4589538835620","price":139.0,"currency_code":"RON","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0568\/8482\/2076\/files\/4589538835620.jpg?v=1791538429","url":"https:\/\/cdsvinyljapan.com\/en-ro\/products\/4589538835620","provider":"CDs Vinyl Japan Store","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
