Prokofiev's second concerto and Scholl's first concerto. Prokofiev's Piano Concerto No. 2, which he completed while a student at the St. Petersburg Conservatory and premiered in 1913 with the composer himself as soloist, was a radical work that caused a great sensation, but its manuscript was lost in the confusion that followed the Russian Revolution. The current version was restored and revised from memory in 1923. Abduraimov is a master of this powerful, wild, modern, and highly romantic work, and it is still fresh in our memories that he performed it at the NHK Symphony Orchestra's subscription concert in June 2023, giving a masterful performance. The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, led by Petrenko, gave a dynamic performance that exceeded all expectations.The coupling is a piano concerto by Alexei Scholl, a native of Ukraine who now lives and works in New York. Scholl has attracted much attention in recent years, and Abduraimov gave the Japanese premiere of the Piano Concerto No. 1 included here during a tour of Japan in December 2024, and also recorded Scholl's concerto work for NAXOS (8.579140). Scholl's beautiful and easy-to-hear works, perhaps romantic in nature, contrast favorably with Prokofiev's wildness, but do not repel; rather, they are a surprisingly natural pairing that seems to resonate with each other.
