This year (2024) will mark the 100th anniversary of Fauré's death. The recording of one of his masterpieces, \"Requiem,\" in its original form, as it was first performed at the Madeleine in Paris on January 16, 1888, is now available. The work was revised soon after its premiere with the addition of trumpet and horn, and the 1888 version usually performed is in that configuration, but this recording is of the string ensemble excluding violin, solo violin, harp, timpani, and organ (the voices are mixed). The piece also does not include the \"Consecration Chorus\" and \"Libera Me\" that were added later. The \"Sanctus\" without horns, for example, will sound rather fresh. The \"Hymn to Jean Racine,\" which Fauré composed as his graduation work at the Nidermeier Conservatory and won first prize, is included in a version including a string quintet, created the following year (here for string ensemble). The Millennium Orchestra's instrumental ensemble and the Namur Chamber Choir, which have attracted attention for their interpretations in accordance with the instruments and performance styles of the time of composition, give beautiful performances of Fauré's choral works in Latin and French, including \"The Fishermen's Mass of Villersville,\" which he co-wrote with Messager, who was still a student at the time, and which are deeply attuned to the works. The works are beautifully performed by the instrumentalists of the Millennium Orchestra and the Namur Chamber Choir. This is an album that allows the listener to appreciate the magnificence of each work beyond its rarity.
