As a young man, he worked as a lawyer, but chose a career in music and studied in Venice in 1710. He then served at the court of Elector Friedrich August I of Saxony, rising to the position of court music director. These two Italian oratorios from Heinichen's last year, 1728, were written as substitutes for the larger Passion, with texts by the Italian poet Stefano Pallavicino, who was active at the Dresden court from 1719. S'imbruna il ciel\" describes an earthquake that the Bible says occurred immediately after \"the death of Jesus,\" and depicts the awe of God through violent natural phenomena. The other piece, \"L'aride tempie ignude,\" is written in the form of an allegorical drama with the characters of death (Morte), hope (Speranza), divine love (Amor divino), and repentance (Poenitenza), and is a dramatic story, much like an opera. The Cologne Academy and its soloists give a tasteful performance of this work, which brings us back to the Passion of Christ and its meaning.
