Born in Leipzig, he was a naturalized Dutch pianist\/composer, who had a close association with Brahms, and in 1887 he was the soloist in the \"Piano Concerto No. 2\" under Brahms' direction. Perhaps because of this, some of his early works show the influence of Brahms and Schumann, but in his later years he broke away from this and wrote quite original works. This 2-CD set is a continuation of a series of symphonies conducted by David Porcelline, and now includes Rentchen's last three symphonies. All but the Seventh Symphony are written in a single movement of 10 to 15 minutes, and all but the Seventh Symphony contain a wide variety of music in a condensed form. Among them, No. 12, \"At Babylon,\" impresses throughout with its use of \"Turkish music\" with timpani, snare drum and bass drum, cymbals, and triangle, and its magnificent organ sound. Only No. 7, \"Edinburgh,\" in four movements, was premiered on December 4, 1930, in Usher Hall to great acclaim.
