The libretto for this work, which is essentially an opera, was written by Pietro Metastasio and describes the tragedy that ensues when the moon goddess Diana, a cold-hearted defender of purity, falls in love with the beautiful young man Endimione. The work was first performed in 1778, but was then forgotten, finally being revived in Salzburg more than 200 years later. The Salzburg Hofmusik faithfully reproduces the sound of the 18th century, and conductor Wolfgang Brunner adds a humorous wit with the harpsichord basso continuo.
