In 1921, Honegger gave a successful premiere at the Theatre de Jola, and the work became one of his early masterpieces. The original version of the oratorio, which Honegger himself revised as a symphonic psalm (oratorio) in 1923, is now the main performance. Here we are performing the original version with a small orchestra. It is an unusual composition with brass and woodwinds, piano, celesta, harmonium, percussion, cello, and contrabass.Consisting of 27 pieces in three parts, it depicts the life of the Old Testament hero King David.
