Capustin, who became interested in jazz while a student at the Moscow Conservatory, has been active in Russia as an arranger, composer, and jazz pianist since the 1950s, and has devoted himself to composition since the 1980s. Since the 1980s, he has devoted himself to composing more than 160 works, \"writing all the jazz improvisations in the score. The question is: \"Are his works jazz or classical? Is it classical?\" This debate continues to this day, but Capustin himself says, \"I am neither a jazz musician nor a jazz pianist. I am a composer.To perform such Kapustin music requires a deep insight into both classical and jazz, and of course Roman Lofarski fulfills that requirement perfectly. After graduating from the Hanover University of Music and Arts, he studied jazz performance at the City University of New York at Queens, and as of 2018 he is based in Berlin, where he is very active in both classical and jazz music. On this album, he balances his own compositions with those of Kapustin and weaves in Jefsky and Lang in places, creating a unique world with dazzling technique and delicate sensibility.
