It was a huge project, performing all four of Brahms' symphonies in one night. The concert was held at the Reisshalle, the orchestra's home at this time. The Reisshalle is a traditional hall with a reputation for its acoustics, and was the home of the North German Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra when they opened its doors in 1908.The North German Radio Symphony Orchestra is making a new start with the opening in January 2017 of its new home at the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, and with it a new name for the orchestra. This is noteworthy because it is a live recording of the complete works by the North German Radio Symphony Orchestra, the orchestra of Brahms' hometown of Hamburg, but the North German Radio Symphony Orchestra's complete Brahms symphonies have been done with Hans Schmidt-Isserstedt and Günter Wandt. Needless to say, the music is a major part of the orchestra's repertoire and plays an important role in the orchestra's history. This is a monumental performance for the orchestra as it enters a new stage of its history.
