His rich, dark voice possesses the tragic power essential for singing Otello and suggests he is a singer of great promise. Given that Domingo was 34 when he first sang Otello, Antonenko may well be the first to truly master this role in the years to come. Marina Poplavskaya is a Russian soprano born in Moscow. She has won numerous competitions and made her debut at the Bolshoi Theatre in 2003. Since around 2005, her career in the West has gained prominence. In contrast to the two young performers, the role of Iago is played by Carlos Álvarez, a renowned Spanish baritone well-known even in Japan, who lends a sense of discipline to the production. The cast is further enriched by the mezzo-soprano Barbara Di Castri—a name known to connoisseurs as a masterful supporting performer—and the American tenor Stephen Costello, who is popular with women not only for his singing but also for his striking good looks.
