Description:

One of the greatest jazz singers of the 20th century, Ella Fitzgerald, the "First Lady of Song," performed with members of the Duke Ellington Orchestra at the Oakland Coliseum in 1967, and this previously unreleased live performance is now available! Recorded at the Oakland Coliseum on June 30, 1967, this release was unearthed from the private tape collection of Norman Granz, founder of Verve Records. You can enjoy Ella's performance with the Duke Ellington Orchestra at its peak. Clearly mixed and mastered from the original analog multi-track tapes, the high-fidelity audio reproduction is unprecedented for a live recording of the time. This release represents a particularly interesting time in Ella's career: in the summer of 1967, she was in the midst of a three-year tour and recording run with Duke Ellington, incorporating hit pop songs from the late '60s into her concert repertoire. Two of these songs, "Alfie" and "Music to Watch Goes By," are being recorded for the first time on this album. On stage with members of the Duke Ellington Orchestra, Ella is both playful and powerful, joking with the audience and then wowing them with her incomparable voice. Ella's band includes Jimmy Jones (p), Bob Cranshaw (b), and Sam Woodard (ds). The Duke Ellington Orchestra features Katt Anderson, Cootie Williams, Harry Carney, Paul Gonsalves, Jimmy Hamilton, Johnny Hodges, Russell Procope, and others.First Lady of Song meets the Duke Ellington Orchestra in this must-hear work, highlighting Ella's reputation as a live performer. .
